Leadership You Trust. Results You Expect.
Why vote for Carolyn Miller?
I know the opportunities that education can provide. Being the first in my family to graduate from college, I realized it was the only way to a better life. I want to continue serving as your Blinn College Trustee to ensure that this opportunity is available to all.
In developing my campaign to remain as your Blinn College Trustee, it was important that the Citizens of Washington County understand four key qualities about me.
My career with the City of Brenham began in 2005 and for almost eight years it has been my privilege to work with the City Council and many of our community leaders who serve on numerous Boards such Brenham Community Development Corporation, Hotel Occupancy Tax, Main Street, Library Advisory and Parks Advisory. As a hard-working, focused professional with the ability to provide accurate, relevant and timely financial information, I gained the respect and trust of those Board members.
It was my reputation as a trusted leader that increased the awareness of the Blinn Board and ultimately led to my appointment in August 2011. One of my fellow board members, Leon Toubin describes me as follows:
“Carolyn is extremely intelligent, dedicated and thorough in everything she does. She immediately showed her interest in learning how the college operates on the different campuses. Carolyn is always prepared for board meetings and her talent in board decisions is welcomed. Carolyn Miller has been and continues to be one of our outstanding leaders in Brenham.” (excerpt from Brenham Banner Press article, November 5, 2012)
Being a fiscally responsible Trustee includes having the financial knowledge to address challenges facing public universities. As increased revenue comes from tuition-paying students rather than from public support, students will seek out academic and professional programs that help them succeed in both life and the workplace, providing the return they expect on their investment in education. In responding to that challenge, coordinated decision making and planning are necessary.
I serve as a member of the Long-Range Planning Committee and we are developing a strategic plan for Blinn College. As an institution, we need to develop a competitive strategy that answers one fundamental question: What is unique about Blinn that would convince a student to enroll here rather than another institution?
As a Certified Public Accountant, I promise to uphold a Code of Professional Conduct. This code has principles of professional conduct, with Objectivity and Independence being one of the principles. The principle of objectivity imposes the obligation to be impartial, intellectually honest, and free of conflicts of interest. Independence precludes relationships that may appear to impair a member’s objectivity. Although this principle applies to the performance of professional services, it also guides my service on the Blinn College Board of Trustees.
Having been appointed to the Board of Trustees, I am an independent voice. As such, I serve all Citizens of Washington County and do not represent one group over another. I am not afraid to challenge the status quo.
As your Blinn Board Trustee, I am mindful that our financial decisions should be transparent to the Citizens of Washington County. My professional success and over 30 years of experience provides a framework for me in this key area. With a steadfast commitment and dedication to transparency, I also realize that upholding the public trust is crucial for any government entity.
